The short answer
Most stair lift prices already include fitting. A straight lift installed runs about $2,500 to $5,000 all in, and the fitting part of that is roughly $300 to $700. Curved is different: the rail is made to your staircase, so the survey and the fitting are baked into a $10,000 to $20,000 price you cannot unbundle. Where you do see a separate install charge is with a used or self-bought lift, and there it runs about $500 to $1,200.
Why the fitting looks free
Stair lift companies sell and fit their own product. The quote you get is one number for the lift, the rail, the fitting and usually the first year of service. Nobody breaks it out, because breaking it out invites you to shop the parts separately.
That is not a trick. It is how the trade works. But it means asking for the install cost on its own usually gets you a blank look.
When you do pay for fitting separately
You bought a used lift Expect $500 to $1,200. Many dealers will not touch a lift they did not sell, so ask before you buy the lift.
You bought a self-install kit and gave up Same range, sometimes more if it is half-assembled.
The staircase needs work first Loose treads, a wobbly newel post or carpet that has to come up are separate trades and separate money.
You need an outlet No socket near the top or bottom of the stairs means an electrician. Small job, but it is not in the lift quote.
The four things that push it up
A curved staircase The rail is manufactured to a survey. This is the single biggest cost driver, and it is not negotiable.
A landing or a turn Even on a mostly straight run, a turn at the top usually makes it a curved job.
Outdoor fitting Weatherproofing and fixing into concrete or masonry, not timber.
Awkward access A narrow hall, a tight front door or a lift that has to be carried up to a second floor all add hours.

Common questions
- Is stair lift installation included in the price?
- Usually yes. A stair lift quote normally covers the lift, the rail, the fitting and often a first year of service as one number. Ask for it in writing anyway, and ask specifically whether the price can change after the survey.
- How much does it cost to install a stair lift by itself?
- About $500 to $1,200 if you supply the lift. It is higher than it sounds because the fitter carries the liability for a machine they did not sell, and many will not do it at all.
- How long does installation take?
- A straight lift is usually two to four hours. A curved one is most of a day, sometimes two. The long part of a curved job is the wait for the rail to be made, which is weeks, not the fitting itself.
- Does a stair lift need an electrician?
- Usually only if there is no outlet near the top or bottom of the stairs. Most lifts are battery powered and charge from an ordinary socket. Running an extension lead down a staircase is not an answer.
- Can the staircase itself add cost?
- Yes, and it is the most common surprise. The rail bolts into the treads, so loose or split treads have to be fixed first. That is a joiner, not the lift company.
