The short answer
Renting a straight stair lift usually runs about $150 to $300 a month, plus an installation fee of $500 to $1,000 and a removal fee at the end. Buying the same lift installed is about $2,500 to $5,000. The break-even lands somewhere between twelve and eighteen months. Under a year, rent. Over two years, buy. In between, the fees decide it.
Rent when the need has an end date
Recovery after surgery A hip or knee replacement, where the stairs are the problem for three to six months, not forever.
A short stay A parent moving in while their own home is sorted out.
Testing whether it helps Some people find they will not use it. Renting finds that out for a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand.
Hospice or end-of-life care Most rental companies handle this sensitively and remove quickly. Say so when you call.
Buy when it is permanent
If the stairs are going to be a problem indefinitely, renting stops making sense quickly. At $200 a month you have spent the price of a lift in about eighteen months, and you still own nothing.
Buying also gets you a better lift. Rental fleets are straight rails in standard lengths, because that is what can be moved between houses.
The fees people miss
Installation $500 to $1,000, usually charged on top of the first month and rarely refundable.
Removal Charged at the end. Ask the figure before you sign, not after.
Minimum term Most rentals have one, often three months. Leaving early does not always save you money.
Damage to the stairs The rail bolts into the treads. Ask who fills the holes when it comes out, and whether that is included.
Curved staircases barely rent at all
A curved rail is manufactured for one staircase. It cannot be moved to the next customer, so rental companies either refuse curved jobs or charge close to the purchase price.
If your stairs turn, assume renting is not an option and price a purchase instead.
