The short answer
Installation adds roughly $2,000 to $8,000 on top of the tub. A straight swap into an existing alcove, with the plumbing where it already is, sits at the low end. Moving plumbing, upgrading the water heater, adding a circuit for jets, or widening the doorway to get the tub in each push it up. All in, most walk-in tub projects land between $6,000 and $15,000.
The five things that set the number
Does the plumbing move? A walk-in tub drains differently and often faster. If the drain has to move, the floor opens and a plumber gets involved.
Does it need power? Air or water jets need a dedicated circuit. That is an electrician and a permit in most places.
Will the water heater keep up? A walk-in tub holds more water than a standard one. Some homes need a bigger heater, which is its own job.
Can you get it through the door? Walk-in tubs are tall and rigid. If the bathroom door is narrow, the frame comes off, and sometimes the wall opens.
What is under the old tub? Rot around a leaking tub is common and only visible once it is out. This is the surprise that changes quotes mid-job.
Why the quote comes from the seller
Walk-in tubs are almost always sold and fitted by the same company, often in your kitchen at an in-home appointment. That means the price you hear is one number and it is quoted to you personally.
You can still shop it. Get more than one company in, and ask each the five questions above so you are comparing the same job.
Where the money might be better spent
A walk-in tub solves getting into a bath. It does not solve everything, and it is slow: you sit in the tub while it fills and again while it drains.
If the goal is a safe wash rather than a soak, a tub-to-shower conversion usually costs less and is quicker to use every day. Price both before you commit.
